A couple of weeks after unveiling its first (controversial) poster, Cannes Film Festival has released its official 2017 selection via a live press conference.
Announced by festival president Pierre Lescure and general delegate Thierry Frémaux are eighteen competitors out of 49 films in total. Hailing from 29 countries, the list includes nine debut features and twelve female directors.
It’ll come as no surprise to hear that Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, starring Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning, Kristen Dust and Colin Farrell, holds a place on the shortlist, alongside fellow US directors Noah Baumbach (The Meyerowitz Stories) and Todd Haynes (Wonderstruck).
Among the first-time nominees are Michael Haneke (Happy End), Yorgos Lanthimos (The Killing of a Sacred Deer), and Andrey Zvyagintsev (Loveless).
A number of French filmmakers have also made the cut this year, including Michel Hazanavicius (Le Redoutable), François Ozon (L’amant Double) and Jacques Doillon (Rodin).
Set to take place from May 17 to 28, this will be the 70th edition of the festival. Set to open up events is French director Arnaud Desplechin with Ishamel’s Ghosts, starring Mathieu Amalric, Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg.
This year’s edition also plans to pay homage to the late Polish director Andrzej Wajda, who passed away last October.
Beyond the competition, Cannes has come up a very interesting selection for its special and midnight screenings, complete with a few surprises.
The audience will be treated to a viewing of Alejandro González Iñárritu’s short film Carne y Arena, as well as an exclusive premiere of the first two episodes of the new season of Twin Peaks.
Jane Campion (Top of the Lake) and Raymond Depardon (12 jours) will also be returning to Cannes as well as Kristen Stewart who is set to present short film Come Swim.
As a reminder, Monica Belluci will be serving as master of ceremonies with Pedro Almodóvar presiding over the competition jury.
